Kitchen Surface Cleaning

Think of these various cleaning formulas as starting points. As you begin to use these cleaning ingredients, you may find that you prefer one over another, and you’ll probably even start creating cleaning recipes of your own.

Surface Spray

  • 1 part vinegar
  • 1 part water
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon

Just juice your half lemon into a spray bottle container, with 1 part vinegar and 1 part water, and you’re ready to clean. This is effective for any shiny surface, and doesn’t require rinsing.

Hint: Save that rind! You can use it to bleach your sink!

Degreasing Spray

  • 1 part vinegar
  • 2 parts water
  • 1 tablespoon castile soap

Great for the stovetop and refrigerator—the vinegar shines and deodorizes and the soap helps cut grease.

Abrasive Cleanser

  • 3 parts baking soda
  • 1 part warm water
  • A squirt or two of castile soap
  • Juice of one lemon

Make a paste with the baking soda, warm water and castile soap and juice one lemon directly into the small mixing container. Scrub with a scouring pad. For tougher baked-on food, use a little salt to increase scouring power. This also makes a great oven cleaner. Let it stand in the oven overnight, and scrub the paste away the next morning.
